February 8, 2021Bryce Dallas Howard, Seth Gabel Voice Star in Video Game ‘Maquette’

Howard recalls that there were some parts that were “somewhat improvisational that we would spontaneously come up with because it was all rooted in this place of character. She goes on to say that Lemoore had a vision of the chemistry he wanted to capture, and in order to do that, Howard and Gabel dug “a little bit deeper,” which she describes as a fun process.

Of the differences between voice recording for a video game and more traditional on-screen acting, Howard says that it’s more similar than one might think. “A character is a character is a character,” she says, though when you have the advantage of being able to use your face, you don’t have to necessarily focus as much on the articulation of what you’re experiencing emotionally being expressed verbally.”

June 7, 2019Rocketman’s Bryce Dallas Howard on Elton John’s Mother, Taron Egerton’s Underwear, and That Accent

“I worked with a wonderful dialect coach, and I actually stayed in the accent the entire time. The process is like learning a language. If you immerse yourself in the country, and you’re speaking in a language all the time, your brain is going to connect the dots much faster than practicing in isolated spurts. The fact that we were shooting in the UK, I thought to myself, “I might as well just go for it.” I did that as well on a movie that I did years ago with Kenneth Branagh, called As You Like It. I did a British accent on that which was really fun. David Oyelowo was actually the person who told me — encouraged me — to do that. To stay in the accent the whole time. He’s a very loving person, and so he made me feel not embarrassed about it. I’m really grateful to him for that! So that’s kind of always been my approach to a dialect.

May 22, 2019Rocketman Star Bryce Dallas Howard Says She Votes for the Environment With Every Dollar She Spends

Interestingly enough, like how my parents who are in the same generation as Elton John, they were listening to music that they had grown up with from their parents’ generation, I listened to a lot of music of my parents’ generation.

What’s crazy is that part of my introduction to Elton John was The Lion King because it came out when I was a kid. I remember falling in love with that movie and the soundtrack as everyone did, and then wanting to listen to more Elton John, so, I remember that being a segue for me.

May 21, 2019Bryce Dallas Howard Talks Wearing Resale on ‘Rocketman’ Tour, Playing Elton John’s Mom

I don’t work with a stylist. I haven’t for quite a long time, but I get very good advice from my publicist Alex Schack. It’s funny because I was actually just telling someone the story of me buying [my red carpet] clothes and I realized that it started at my very first trip to Cannes when I was here with a Lars von Trier movie, Manderlay, in 2005. I managed to borrow a dress from Zac Posen, who is so lovely and ended up making my wedding dress later. And for everything else I didn’t really know what to do!

Usually, I keep the premiere dresses to auction and I’ve done maybe ten total including the [$300 ruby sequined Dress the Population gown from] the 2017 SAG Awards, the [$240 Topshop dress at the] 2017 Critics’ Choice Awards, dresses from the Jurassic World and Pete’s Dragon premieres, and a couple others last year. And I’ve resold at least 50 other red carpet looks.

May 18, 2019Bryce Dallas Howard always ‘thanks’ the set after filming

The ‘Rocketman’ actress admitted she can be superstitious and follows a regular ritual whenever filming has wrapped, as well as having the traditional actor’s avoidance of uttering the title of Shakespeare’s play ‘Macbeth’.

Asked if she has any on-set superstitions, she told Total Film: “I don’t say the Scottish play. I won’t say that word.

“I also thank every set before I leave. People don’t notice I do it. I’m very stealth.

“But before I leave a set, what you’ll see is that I just stand there and look around. Then you’ll see me kiss my hand and press it to the wall. Just me being like, ‘Thank you.’ “

May 9, 2019How Bryce Dallas Howard navigates the perils of fame

It’s one of those blisteringly bright hot California days, in a glassy, modern house high up in Los Angeles’ meandering hills, and Bryce Dallas Howard, 38, is looking for some shade. Though she’s at the apex of Hollywood royalty — she just starred in two blockbuster “Jurassic World” flicks that have raked in nearly 3 billion dollars worldwide, while her “Black Mirror” episode for Netflix was one of the buzziest in that series’ history — Howard seems somehow not of Hollywood, constitutionally out of place in its sunshine. With her red hair and very fair skin, she laughs, loudly: “Ha! I really love being indoors.”

She doesn’t live in a palm tree-framed glass box over Sunset Boulevard, but is instead raising her children (Theodore, 12, and Beatrice, 7) with her husband, actor Seth Gabel, in a leafy corner of Westchester County. She also deflects her leading lady status, pointing out that her role as Claire Dearing in the “Jurassic World” franchise was more of a “team role.”

“I haven’t been in the hot seat. I haven’t had the ‘It girl’ thing, that kind of pressure. The star of those films is the dinosaurs, really. And by the way, there’s also Chris Pratt,” she says, with another earthy, uproarious laugh.

Later this month, Howard plays Elton John’s mother, Sheila Dwight, in the musician’s biopic “Rocketman,” a major spectacle and a meditation on what it’s like to be born with an irrepressible, outsize talent, against all odds.

May 4, 2019Bryce Dallas Howard Says Directing Star Wars TV Series ‘Mandalorian’ Was ‘Incredible’

“Yeah, it’s been amazing,” she told IBT at an event for Tide Purclean in early April. “Done directing, almost done editing. It’s awesome. It’s been incredible. And working under [executive producers] Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni has been such, just, I don’t know. It’s like going to Star Wars grad school. It’s so fun. Everyone is having such a good time all the time ‘cause you’re on a Star Wars set.”

“I’m directing full-time. So I’m directing right now a feature documentary, and then ‘Mandalorian’ and then there’s another feature for Netflix that I think is gonna happen in a few months, actually. And so yeah, I’ll then go and do ‘Jurassic’ and then hopefully more directing. I mean, I definitely always want to act, but for a little while it might be more kind of sort of between directing projects, I think.”

April 9, 2019Bryce Dallas Howard says that her ‘Rocketman’ transformation into Elton John’s mom was inspired by her own mother’s appearance

BDH: Yes! We were in upstate New York for my brother’s wedding, and we’d been talking about moving the family from Los Angeles back to New York. And we kept driving past this one stone house that we loved. But it wasn’t for sale. Then, on our last day there, we got an email saying that very house was about to hit the market. January 15, 2019My worst moment: Bryce Dallas Howard and getting panned in her first big role

“As a young actor, getting a bad review in the New York Times, that’s one of your nightmares, and in this case it was like being found out. You’ve been caught and you just have to surrender to the situation that you’re in and take responsibility. But it was super freeing because the worst-case scenario happened and I got through it.

When I look back and remember the distress I felt of not being at the level that’s being asked of you, that was very painful. But seeing that I could be reviewed (badly) and that I could turn it around so quickly was so comforting. I wasn’t living in that fear anymore.

All of this stuff initially had to do with wanting to ‘make it.’ Being like, oh gosh, what’s the consequence of this kind of public feedback? But when you’re thinking about mastery rather than a career — because a career has to do with money and how you support yourself — but this was about my artistic development, looking at that and being like, yeah of course I’m not there yet. So what am I going to do to get there? You take the feedback and you keep practicing.

It was definitely intensely embarrassing, but ultimately encouraging and kind of like divine intervention. It took some time and a big old paradigm-shifting event to get me to that next level. This was also not just about getting out of my own way, it was about practice and the expertise of those around me and the honesty of my friends and the candor. And specificity of that review, because there was actual feedback and concrete insights I could apply.”

So when I think about Bella, I just think of my sister Paige and that very, very deep bond between her and Beau. She has a wonderful boyfriend, but the first question all of us asked was, “What does Beau think?” If Beau doesn’t like him, then he is gone. [laugh] A relationship with a dog or any animal kind of transcends what you would typically assume one of those relationships would be like and becomes almost like a soulmate.”

November 2, 2018Home Entertainment Interview: Chris Pratt & Bryce Dallas Howard For ‘Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom’

“As an actor, on every single job you are just there to be of service to the filmmakers and that team, ultimately. We are like independent contractors who are brought in to provide a service. But, sometimes, you are lucky and sometimes you get brought in and you are hired to perform a service and they draw you into the inner circle and you get to be privy to their process. And sometimes you get to collaborate with them in that process. While we were making the first movie, Colin Trevorrow was an incredibly collaborative individual, and so we were always fantasizing about what a second movie could be and what a third movie could be. And Colin definitely had a very clear vision from the start with Steven Spielberg that they had worked out. Then, with this one, naturally, it was the same exact thing, talking about what might be possible. That is part of the fun. We do have a definite sense of the direction it’s going in.”

September 18, 2018Bryce Dallas Howard on Life After ‘Jurassic World’ & Singing in the Elton John Biopic ‘Rocketman’

Before coming to Jurassic World, you hadn’t really done anything like this franchise before, so did you have any hesitation about signing on to it, in the beginning, or was it just an immediate yes, from the beginning?

HOWARD: Of course, it was an immediate yes! I got involved around May of 2013, and then the movie actually got pushed and no one else was cast yet. There was awhile where it was like, “I’m doing this, and damn, it’s not happening,” and I wasn’t really allowed to talk to people about it. And then, finally, when the movie got the green light and was happening, Chris [Pratt] was cast shortly thereafter and it became real. From the get-go, it was just me, desperately hoping that it would happen, and then it came through. And so, the fact that there’s now multiple movies is so great.

Are you singing in the film?

HOWARD: Yeah. Not a ton, but yeah.

June 21, 2018Bryce Dallas Howard semi-risked her life to do this interview about Jurassic World with me

I insisted. I did. Because the moment was there where I was in the Dinosaur Protection Group office, and in the following scene I was in Lockwood’s mansion, and it was originally written for me to wear sneakers, and I was like, no. That’s less believable than dinosaurs being reanimated. This is a woman who outran a T-Rex in high heeled shoes, if she’s going to the office, she’s comfortable in heels. That was something that was really definitely important to me, because it felt really empowering to me personally, getting to play out that journey in the first movie, and the only thing that felt right was having an opening shot with high heels. Then of course when she goes to the island she’s prepared. She knows she’s going to be running around.

April 25, 2018On Set interview: What to expect from Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom

“To speak to what you were saying regarding Claire and the way she’s shifted, her internal self and her external self are starting to become one whereas in the last film her behavior, her actions were really out of alignment with her values. That was the inner conflict with the character and by the end of it her power is being used for good; her righteousness is being used for good. The very thing that was leading her astray is the very thing that saved Chris Pratt and two cowering children surrounded by stuffed animals!

Where we are now, I think, is we’re seeing a woman who is definitely stepping into her power. She’s fighting for these dinosaurs. She’s taking responsibility and trying to basically present the argument that there’s lions in the world and there are dangerous species of snakes and sharks… there’s all these dangerous creatures and yet if those creatures are threatened with an extinction level event we protect them. So, guys, we have an endangered species here. They’re actually here. This is now reality.”

April 19, 2018Jurassic World: Bryce Dallas Howard still wears high heels in Fallen Kingdom

One of the biggest discussions that emerged from the release of 2015’s Jurassic World was, “Why the hell does Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) wear heels throughout the movie?” Despite being in the jungle and having to run from various gigantic terrifying dinosaurs, Claire never took off her high heels. This did not please the internet, to say the least.

Well, America, your concerns have been addressed…sorta. “We didn’t think that folks were going be as excitable as they were,” says Howard in retrospect about “heel-gate,” adding that co-writer/executive producer Colin Trevorrow wanted to make sure that the audience’s concerns were heard. However, Howard — who actually trained her ankles for the high-heel stunts in the first film — was adamant that they also stayed true to the character.

Claire has made a 180-degree shift from dinosaur hater to lover, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to ditch her heels completely. “I wanted it to be clear from the beginning that Claire has changed and she’s wearing heels still,” notes Howard. “A person can have an inner journey and still love heels! And, yes, she’s prepared to go to the island and she’s wearing boots.”

April 1, 2018 — “Lady Of The Dinosaurs” – Ciak Magazine (translated)

Her Claire is going back to Isla Nublar – this time, without heels. And Bryce Dallas Howard is thinking about directing.

What’s the question you’ve been asked the most about the Jurassic World sequel?
I was expecting something scientific about dinosaurs, or something philosophical about mankind’s desire to play God, yet all anybody wants to know is whether my Claire Dearing has stored her heels away or stubbornly keeps running around in them.

And the answer is…?
You, too! Well, when she’s back on the island, Claire is ready and better equipped with explorer’s boots. Though she does have her beloved heels when we first see her in the so-called civilization. The costume department wanted me to wear comfortable shoes, flats or sneakers. I insisted: are you kidding me? Claire is casually elegant, she would never give her heels up. Happy now?

She’s the focus of the story, this time…
Claire founded the Dinosaur Protection Group and is leading the return to the island to save them, also thanks to the aid of Owen Grady. So I’d say it’s more of a collaboration. Still, Claire’s evolution since the first scenes of Jurassic World is sensational. And it’s not over yet.

Do you have any suggestions for what her story will be in the third installment?
Maybe she could be the founder of a Dinosaur Party and become the new President of the United States. We could really use that…

What differences have you noticed between Colin Trevorrow, director of the first movie, and J. A. Bayona?
They are both great cinephiles, kind and brilliant – Spielberg, the producer, wouldn’t randomly choose his collaborators. J.A. has a more european approach, an irresistible accent and impeccable taste: he confessed, blushing, that his movie crush as a viewer has always been Penélope Cruz. And two years ago he had a cameo in La reina de España only because she was in it.

This is the first sequel in your career, is that correct?
Yes, and it was like coming back to a family. I have never been part of an ongoing tv series, so the only fitting comparison I can think of is that of a theater company, where the scripts change but the actors don’t. It’s wonderful.

What’s in your future plans?
Debuting as a director. I’ve done some short movies, commercials, documentaries, and I’ve done some theater directing. But I’m aiming at an actual movie.

The last time I interviewed your father he said he has a desire of going back to acting. And that he’s waiting to work with you.
That’s great, I’ll be happy to audition him. That’s what he did when he picked his mother, aka my grandma, for a part in Cocoon.

“If you allow your spirit to be broken by trying to conform in ways that are not even possible, you will be off track for your entire life and you will lose track of what is important in every area. That’s insanity,” the actress said.

“It was really important for me to show that this insecurity that she feels in the world is because she’s not comfortable in her own skin,” she continued. “She’s not accepting herself for who she is. I wanted it be about image, and about how people want to control what other people think about them by trying to control themselves in ways that are harmful.”

“I’ve never, ever, in my entire life, been upset at a casting choice. I started taping my dad’s auditions when I was 11, when he was auditioning actors for one of his movies. I would see, over and over again, that there wasn’t just one actor for the role. It was really clear that there were a lot of people who could play a character really well, and it would always come down to something kind of weird and non-obvious as to why a person was cast. If you’re not right, you’re not right, but that’s okay.”

Q: Do you enjoy playing diametrically opposed roles?
A: I’ve been doing this the whole time I’ve been acting. In college (New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts), I’d go from edgy avant-garde to street theatre stuff. There would always be this darkness and then light.

Q: Are you preparing for Jurassic World 2 in London?

January 18, 2017 — “In My Library: Bryce Dallas Howard

Here’s what’s in her library:

The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
A boy named Santiago has a dream about a treasure hidden in the Egyptian pyramids, and journeys to find it. It’s almost like Siddhartha’s journey, as he grows and learns lessons and falls in love and ultimately comes back to where he began, where the treasure was all along. This was the first book I bought multiple copies of. I gave one to my father for Christmas. He loved it!

Unsubscribe by Jocelyn K. Glei
This is basically a self-help book that helps you manage your addiction to e-mail. It’s stupid: If I hear from someone I care about, I angst about my e-mail back and not answer, but I’ll answer a stranger promptly! I’m always apologizing. This book helped show me you can really just say no.

The Swans of Fifth Avenue by Melanie Benjamin
This is a fictional but heavily researched account of the most powerful and glamorous society women in New York in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, women like Babe Paley, who were great friends with Truman Capote before he betrayed them. I heard about the swans as a teenager and became obsessed with them. I’ve optioned the book and want to turn it into a miniseries.

Just Kids by Patti Smith
Smith’s memoir is largely about her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe, which started when they were teenagers in New York. My late teens were spent downtown with friends, and we went through a lot of ups and downs. This book is heartbreaking, warming and honest.

August 12, 2016 — “Why Pete’s Dragon Stars Bryce Dallas Howard & Wes Bentley are the coolest parents ever”

“Howard and Bentley both have a kid of their own, ironically a son and daughter, and it helps that their families are close. So close, in fact, that Bentley says Howard “felt comfortable enough” to break into his house in New Zealand (where the film was shot) and retrieve a gift he got for her. Howard says the families even went on vacation together and stayed in a house on an island off the New Zealand coast. Their kids are super close and Howard’s hubby Seth briefly worked with Bentley on AHS: Hotel.”

August 11, 2016 — “The Unignorable Bryce Dallas Howard”

Of the many lessons she gleaned from her own childhood spent on movie sets, Howard said that the most enduring is that not everyone finds success — which is why, when asked to name the moment in her career that has made her the happiest, Howard gleefully replied, “The fact that it’s happening at all!”

“In my mind I thought, Prepare yourself for a long haul here. Prepare for crippling disappointment, prepare for significant rejection. That’s what I was expecting. And there was that, but … it would always feel unexpected,” she continued, trying to find the words to articulate further. Despite early adversity, nepotism worries, rude comments about her appearance from tabloids, and reviews that range from glowing to glowering, things are working out for Bryce Dallas Howard — and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. “I know the statistics. I know the odds. I know how many great people are out there. … I am consistently surprised and delighted every time I get another job.”

August 11, 2016 — “Bryce Dallas Howard is ready to direct a feature film”

“I’ve directed a ton of short films and commercials and digital content and all that. But I’ve never directed a feature before. And I would love to! Growing up in a household with a director as a parent, I know kind of what the commitment is. It’s very different for a director than it is for an actor. For an actor it’s like maximum six months; for a director it’s minimum two years! So I’m a little more precious about that and kind of what the first one may be, but I would love the opportunity for sure.”

I went up to him and said, “i don’t know if you remember be but,” and Robert Redford responded with “BRYCE!” Sometimes when you do a movie with someone and I don’t know if I ever worked with an actor as iconic as Robert Redford but you have this experience with them that is a very human and regular experience but then when you see them in the context of everyone else its suddenly very intimating.”
