February 8, 2021 — Bryce Dallas Howard, Seth Gabel Voice Star in Video Game ‘Maquette’

Howard recalls that there were some parts that were “somewhat improvisational that we would spontaneously come up with because it was all rooted in this place of character. She goes on to say that Lemoore had a vision of the chemistry he wanted to capture, and in order to do that, Howard and Gabel dug “a little bit deeper,” which she describes as a fun process.

Of the differences between voice recording for a video game and more traditional on-screen acting, Howard says that it’s more similar than one might think. “A character is a character is a character,” she says, though when you have the advantage of being able to use your face, you don’t have to necessarily focus as much on the articulation of what you’re experiencing emotionally being expressed verbally.”

“I worked with a wonderful dialect coach, and I actually stayed in the accent the entire time. The process is like learning a language. If you immerse yourself in the country, and you’re speaking in a language all the time, your brain is going to connect the dots much faster than practicing in isolated spurts. The fact that we were shooting in the UK, I thought to myself, “I might as well just go for it.” I did that as well on a movie that I did years ago with Kenneth Branagh, called As You Like It. I did a British accent on that which was really fun. David Oyelowo was actually the person who told me — encouraged me — to do that. To stay in the accent the whole time. He’s a very loving person, and so he made me feel not embarrassed about it. I’m really grateful to him for that! So that’s kind of always been my approach to a dialect.

Interestingly enough, like how my parents who are in the same generation as Elton John, they were listening to music that they had grown up with from their parents’ generation, I listened to a lot of music of my parents’ generation.

What’s crazy is that part of my introduction to Elton John was The Lion King because it came out when I was a kid. I remember falling in love with that movie and the soundtrack as everyone did, and then wanting to listen to more Elton John, so, I remember that being a segue for me.

I don’t work with a stylist. I haven’t for quite a long time, but I get very good advice from my publicist Alex Schack. It’s funny because I was actually just telling someone the story of me buying [my red carpet] clothes and I realized that it started at my very first trip to Cannes when I was here with a Lars von Trier movie, Manderlay, in 2005. I managed to borrow a dress from Zac Posen, who is so lovely and ended up making my wedding dress later. And for everything else I didn’t really know what to do!

Usually, I keep the premiere dresses to auction and I’ve done maybe ten total including the [$300 ruby sequined Dress the Population gown from] the 2017 SAG Awards, the [$240 Topshop dress at the] 2017 Critics’ Choice Awards, dresses from the Jurassic World and Pete’s Dragon premieres, and a couple others last year. And I’ve resold at least 50 other red carpet looks.

It’s one of those blisteringly bright hot California days, in a glassy, modern house high up in Los Angeles’ meandering hills, and Bryce Dallas Howard, 38, is looking for some shade. Though she’s at the apex of Hollywood royalty — she just starred in two blockbuster “Jurassic World” flicks that have raked in nearly 3 billion dollars worldwide, while her “Black Mirror” episode for Netflix was one of the buzziest in that series’ history — Howard seems somehow not of Hollywood, constitutionally out of place in its sunshine. With her red hair and very fair skin, she laughs, loudly: “Ha! I really love being indoors.”

She doesn’t live in a palm tree-framed glass box over Sunset Boulevard, but is instead raising her children (Theodore, 12, and Beatrice, 7) with her husband, actor Seth Gabel, in a leafy corner of Westchester County. She also deflects her leading lady status, pointing out that her role as Claire Dearing in the “Jurassic World” franchise was more of a “team role.”

“I haven’t been in the hot seat. I haven’t had the ‘It girl’ thing, that kind of pressure. The star of those films is the dinosaurs, really. And by the way, there’s also Chris Pratt,” she says, with another earthy, uproarious laugh.

Later this month, Howard plays Elton John’s mother, Sheila Dwight, in the musician’s biopic “Rocketman,” a major spectacle and a meditation on what it’s like to be born with an irrepressible, outsize talent, against all odds.

“We were shooting Jurassic and this was right before that movement [began], but we could all feel it, obviously. It was overdue,” she said. “He said to me, ‘Bryce, there are a lot of actresses. “She’s 65 and she hasn’t messed with her face at all or anything, so it’s what I’m going to look like when I’m 65,” Bryce continued. “So that was something that was really fun. We were putting on a lot more freckles than we thought I needed at first and it made the right difference.”

“As a young actor, getting a bad review in the New York Times, that’s one of your nightmares, and in this case it was like being found out. You’ve been caught and you just have to surrender to the situation that you’re in and take responsibility. But it was super freeing because the worst-case scenario happened and I got through it.

When I look back and remember the distress I felt of not being at the level that’s being asked of you, that was very painful. But seeing that I could be reviewed (badly) and that I could turn it around so quickly was so comforting. I wasn’t living in that fear anymore.

All of this stuff initially had to do with wanting to ‘make it.’ Being like, oh gosh, what’s the consequence of this kind of public feedback? But when you’re thinking about mastery rather than a career — because a career has to do with money and how you support yourself — but this was about my artistic development, looking at that and being like, yeah of course I’m not there yet. So what am I going to do to get there? You take the feedback and you keep practicing.

It was definitely intensely embarrassing, but ultimately encouraging and kind of like divine intervention. It took some time and a big old paradigm-shifting event to get me to that next level. This was also not just about getting out of my own way, it was about practice and the expertise of those around me and the honesty of my friends and the candor. And specificity of that review, because there was actual feedback and concrete insights I could apply.”

“We saw A Dog’s Purpose before our cat died, and we intentionally watched it with our kids and it really, really helped,” the actress says. While the mother of two says she was “a wreck” during that film, she reveals A Dog’s Way Home is much more of an “adventure” film.”

Before coming to Jurassic World, you hadn’t really done anything like this franchise before, so did you have any hesitation about signing on to it, in the beginning, or was it just an immediate yes, from the beginning?

HOWARD: Of course, it was an immediate yes! I got involved around May of 2013, and then the movie actually got pushed and no one else was cast yet. And then, finally, when the movie got the green light and was happening, Chris [Pratt] was cast shortly thereafter and it became real. From the get-go, it was just me, desperately hoping that it would happen, and then it came through. And so, the fact that there’s now multiple movies is so great.

Are you singing in the film?

HOWARD: Yeah. Not a ton, but yeah.

Because the moment was there where I was in the Dinosaur Protection Group office, and in the following scene I was in Lockwood’s mansion, and it was originally written for me to wear sneakers, and I was like, no. That’s less believable than dinosaurs being reanimated. This is a woman who outran a T-Rex in high heeled shoes, if she’s going to the office, she’s comfortable in heels. That was something that was really definitely important to me, because it felt really empowering to me personally, getting to play out that journey in the first movie, and the only thing that felt right was having an opening shot with high heels. Then of course when she goes to the island she’s prepared. She knows she’s going to be running around.

April 19, 2018 — Jurassic World: Bryce Dallas Howard still wears high heels in Fallen Kingdom

One of the biggest discussions that emerged from the release of 2015’s Jurassic World was, “Why the hell does Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) wear heels throughout the movie?” Despite being in the jungle and having to run from various gigantic terrifying dinosaurs, Claire never took off her high heels. This did not please the internet, to say the least.

Well, America, your concerns have been addressed…sorta. “We didn’t think that folks were going be as excitable as they were,” says Howard in retrospect about “heel-gate,” adding that co-writer/executive producer Colin Trevorrow wanted to make sure that the audience’s concerns were heard. However, Howard — who actually trained her ankles for the high-heel stunts in the first film — was adamant that they also stayed true to the character.

Claire has made a 180-degree shift from dinosaur hater to lover, but that doesn’t mean she’s ready to ditch her heels completely. “I wanted it to be clear from the beginning that Claire has changed and she’s wearing heels still,” notes Howard. “A person can have an inner journey and still love heels! And, yes, she’s prepared to go to the island and she’s wearing boots.”

I was expecting something scientific about dinosaurs, or something philosophical about mankind’s desire to play God, yet all anybody wants to know is whether my Claire Dearing has stored her heels away or stubbornly keeps running around in them.

You, too! Well, when she’s back on the island, Claire is ready and better equipped with explorer’s boots. Though she does have her beloved heels when we first see her in the so-called civilization. She’s the focus of the story, this time…
Claire founded the Dinosaur Protection Group and is leading the return to the island to save them, also thanks to the aid of Owen Grady. So I’d say it’s more of a collaboration. Still, Claire’s evolution since the first scenes of Jurassic World is sensational. And it’s not over yet.

Do you have any suggestions for what her story will be in the third installment?
Maybe she could be the founder of a Dinosaur Party and become the new President of the United States. We could really use that…

What differences have you noticed between Colin Trevorrow, director of the first movie, and J. A. Bayona?
They are both great cinephiles, kind and brilliant – Spielberg, the producer, wouldn’t randomly choose his collaborators. J.A. has a more european approach, an irresistible accent and impeccable taste: he confessed, blushing, that his movie crush as a viewer has always been Penélope Cruz. And two years ago he had a cameo in La reina de España only because she was in it.

This is the first sequel in your career, is that correct?
Yes, and it was like coming back to a family. I have never been part of an ongoing tv series, so the only fitting comparison I can think of is that of a theater company, where the scripts change but the actors don’t. It’s wonderful.

What’s in your future plans?
Debuting as a director. I’ve done some short movies, commercials, documentaries, and I’ve done some theater directing. But I’m aiming at an actual movie.

The last time I interviewed your father he said he has a desire of going back to acting. And that he’s waiting to work with you.
That’s great, I’ll be happy to audition him. That’s what he did when he picked his mother, aka my grandma, for a part in Cocoon.

This is a fictional but heavily researched account of the most powerful and glamorous society women in New York in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, women like Babe Paley, who were great friends with Truman Capote before he betrayed them. I heard about the swans as a teenager and became obsessed with them. I’ve optioned the book and want to turn it into a miniseries.

Just Kids by Patti Smith
Smith’s memoir is largely about her friendship with Robert Mapplethorpe, which started when they were teenagers in New York. My late teens were spent downtown with friends, and we went through a lot of ups and downs. This book is heartbreaking, warming and honest.
