January 24, 2017 — “Why Bryce Dallas Howard Kept Her Daughter’s Style Gender-Neutral”
“My [original] approach was that she was gonna wear primarily hand-me-downs from her brother,” Howard, who stars alongside Matthew McConaughey in the crime adventure film Gold, tells PEOPLE Now of her little girl Beatrice Jean, 5. “And that’s what I did. She was bald for a very long time, and so gender [was] a little unclear,” adds the actress, 35. “But that was fine, and there was no problem. I really wanted to wait for her to lead me in a certain direction.”

““There were two ways, really. One was through the hair and costumes and working with the costume designer and developing that instinct — this is her, this is not her — then looking in the mirror at the finished product. ‘Who are you? What would I think of that lady?’ And the other way, I watched Urban Cowboy with Debra Winger again, and I was just — the way she was, so present and alive and passionate, yet also, how dysfunctional and destructive their relationship was. I was like, ‘I think I know this couple. I think I can recognize this kind of partnership.’”
